MONASTIC ORDERS AND THEIR MONASTERIES ON THE TERRITORY OF THE COUNTY JASZ-NAGYKUN-SZOLNOK IN THE YEARS 1920-1950

In the eastern part of Hungary, along both banks of the river Tisza, a county of overwhelmingly protestant population, the county Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok is to be found. On the present day territory of that county 5 catholic convents (3 for men and 2 for women) were working before 1920, according to our estimate with 52 nuns and monks altogether (25 monks — of them 8 lays — and 27 nuns). On the end of the period 1920-1950 altogether 161 nuns and monks (50 monks — of them about 22 lays — and 111 nuns) were living and carrying out their beneficial activities in the 22 convents (6 for monks and 16 for nuns) of 13 orders in 17 settlements of the county. These nuns and monks were carrying out predominantly pastoral or auxiliary, teaching and educational and social activities. The newly founded women's orders — Association of Saint Benedict's Daughters, Association of the People's Educational Sisters named after Christ King — were paying a special attention to the missionary and cultural work to be carried out among the population living in the villages and the detached farmsteads of the Great Hungarian Plain.

The era analyzed in this dissertation can be regarded even in national scale as the period of the flourishing of monastic life, of numerical increase of the orders, of the increase of the orders' activities and of the reinforcement of the monastic discipline. Similar tendencies were to be experienced in that county, too, although the number of the nuns and monks was even at the end of that period lower than the country's average despite the fact taht the development of the nuns' orders was higher than that on national scale.

As a consequence of the political changes the activities of the monastic orders after 1948 increasingly prevented, and at the end of 1950 the orders were suppressed excepting an utmostly few of them. Accordingly, all the convents and monasteries of county Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok were to be left by their inhabitants.
